En Septiembre del 2020 se desató la Segunda Guerra de Nagorno- Karabagh, que tuvo muchísimos problemas para los Armenios por lo poco que se hablaba en los medios y la cantidad de violaciones a los derechos humanos que fueron tapados por los medios, al contrario de lo que se ve ahora con la guerra entre Ucrania y Rusia. Todo lo que están leyendo ahora de los ucranianos, Nosotros, los armenios, lo vivimos en el 2020 ante el silencio del Mundo entero. Por medio de twitter conocí a dos blogueros armenios y se dió ésta nota…
La Guerra del 2020. Una guerra que se produjo en una zona indefinida de población de Armenia adentro de las tierras de Azerbaiyán, lo que sería ‘de iure’. Una sangrienta guerra de 44 días donde, según Putin, calculó que hubo 6000 fallecidos (pienso que pudieron haber sido más todavía). Los medios se quedaron mudos, al punto tal que muchísima gente ni sabe que se dió semejante guerra: gente que vive en una región llamada Artsakh que es de descendencia armenia quedó bajo Azerbaiyán de la época de la Unión Soviética. Al caer la URSS, la gente de esa zona votó por su independencia que la que Azerbaiyán se opuso y se desató una sangrienta guerra que ganó Armenia. Desde esa época, nunca ha sido del todo claro porqué no se pudo resolver ésto y hay culpa de los dos lados. En ésta misma página pueden leer la nota que tuve con el periodista español Pablo González (pueden encontrar la nota en éste link: https://lapelotaenlacabeza.com/2021/06/11/me-salvo-mi-curiosidad-futbolistica-my-curiosity-for-soccer-saved-me-pablo-gonzalez/) que conocí por medio de twitter durante la guerra, siendo el único periodista neutro que hablaba en español. Y por medio de esa guerra pude conocer a dos blogueros armenios que están en twitter: Mundo Armenio e Imperio Armenia. Por cuestiones de privacidad, no quisieron divulgar su nombre.
La charla se dió como entre amigos, donde coincidimos que a la larga «todos los armenios terminamos siendo parientes de alguna manera, por cómo fuimos teniendo que mudarnos a otros países» me dijo Mundo Armenio. Lo que me llamó poderosamente la atención es que ambos son de España y los dos simpatizan por el mismo equipo: Málaga, aunque Mundo Armenio me aclaró que es «no tan fanático como en mi juventud», pero que igual sigue la campaña del equipo, con el agregado de que no se conocían antes de la guerra. Al preguntarles por quien es el Clásico del Málaga (nota: mi curiosidad futbolera siempre va por conocer las rivalidades), me dijeron los dos «Sevilla y en menor medida el Cádiz». Ambos compartieron el dolor de la eliminación de la Champions en el 2013 ante el Borussia Dortmund que tuvo muchísimas polémicas y como no había VAR en aquella época, no se podía reveer ningún fallo arbitral. Imperio Armenio me dijo tres veces «fue offside… no lo puedo creer todavía».
Como buenos simpatizantes que son, viven con mucha desazón la situación actual del Málaga, que se encuentra en la Segunda División y peleando por no irse a la Tercera Categoría aunque con la esperanza de ver tiempos mejores y volver a verlos en La Liga jugando contra el Barcelona y el Real Madrid.
Al preguntarles cuando y porqué comenzaron sus páginas, ambos coincidieron que comenzaron con el comienzo de la guerra en el 2020 y porque «hay pocas páginas que hablen de Armenia que sean en español».
La razón por la que quise hacer ésta nota junto a Ellos dos fue por la guerra que se desató entre Ucrania y Rusia. La impotencia que vivimos los Armenios en el 2020, con los medios que informaban o mejor dicho desinformaban o mostraban poco y nada. Muchísima gente ahora ve a la gente ucraniana sufriendo y salen los anuncios por youtube acerca de dónde se pueden hacer donaciones pero cuando era el turno de los Armenios, recibimos burlas por redes sociales y en Los Ángeles nos dijeron «vayan a su país a protestar, nos generan problemas de tránsito», mientras que por toda Europa hubo protestas de los Armenios y los únicos que donábamos éramos Nosotros.
Una de las tantas cosas que ví durante la guerra:
De paso les comento que la Guerra del 2020 fue Artsaj, que viene luchando hace décadas por su independencia, contra Azerbaiyán. En mi caso, a pesar de lo triste que fue todo, también pienso en esas madres azerbaiyanas que perdieron a seres queridos. No me olvido de una señora mayor de edad. Antes de la guerra hicieron una encuesta en un canal de TV de Azerbaiyán en las calles preguntando «¿Quiere ir a una guerra con Armenia?» y la señora dijo «¿Para qué? Van a morir muchos chicos jóvenes para nada» y se me viene a la mente ver videos de Armenios ejecutados por los de Azerbaiyán. A diferencia de ésta guerra, los ucranianos no ven imágenes sangrientas como las de un terrorista sirio que peleó por Azerbaiyán y le cortó la cabeza a un soldado Armenio por el simple hecho de tener un trofeo de guerra. Leí durante 44 días comentarios de azerbaiyanos, turcos, judíos, ucranianos (sí, UCRANIANOS), pakistaníes y PALESTINOS (justamente los mismos que reclaman por tierras) festejando el triunfo de ésta guerra y la «liberación de tierras». Hubo muchísima gente de Armenia que fue a pelear en el 2020 y sufrimos las bajas de deportistas que hubiesen participado en los Juegos Olímpicos e inclusive un jugador de la Selección Sub- 20 de Armenia: Gor Sargsayan, del equipo de judo de Armenia, Albert Dadoyan, campeón europeo en levantamiento de pesas, Tatul Harutyunyan, también campeón en levantamiento de pesas, Erik Saryan, jugador del Lokomotiv Yereván y Liparit Dashtonyan, ex jugador del Alashkert.
Fuera de la zona de Artsaj es donde también ha sido el problema del eje central de disputa. Cuando los Armenios ganaron la Guerra en la década del ’90 hubo una zona que ya era de Azerbaiyán y, según me contó Mundo Armenio, el Presidente de Armenia en aquella época, Levon Ter Petrossian, quiso «negociar devolviendo esas tierras a cambio de la Independencia de Artsakh pero fue visto como un traidor a la patria, porque los armenios seguían con las mieles de la victoria y no pensaron que en un futuro podía darse otro conflicto». Uno como descendiente de Armenios tampoco es ciego y ve que hubo errores del gobierno propio y que podrían haber evitado todo lo que sucedió en el 2020.
En la Guerra vimos una impresionante cantidad de atrocidades que no voy a compartir con Ustedes porque me duele revivirlo y porque no hay necesidad de compartirlo, pero pueden buscar las atrocidades en Google, como por ejemplo escribiendo «Armenian head cut off» y pueden ver algunas de las sanguinarias cosas que vimos, con un nivel de salvajismo y barbarie que no creía posible en éstos tiempos. ¿Cómo se puede odiar a alguien con tanta bronca por el sólo hecho de ser de otro país? Las condenas de parte de los europeos quedaron en la nada misma, solamente publicaciones por twitter al nivel de «paren chicos, no se golpeen» y era constantemente ver fotos de «Todos con Azerbaiyán» con gente de los países antes mencionados. Ya sé que una cosa es una región y otra es un país entero que está sufriendo, pero el dolor no deja de ser menor.
Adelantando en el tiempo, han seguido los conflictos con los azerbaiyanos queriendo borrar inscripciones religiosas de las iglesias y después salieron publicaciones de que esas iglesias son «¡Albanesas!». Realmente nunca sentí tanta impotencia como en éste último tiempo, no solamente con la guerra, es todo lo posterior que ví y sigo viendo y que leo de Mundo Armenio y de Imperio Armenia. Ahora con Rusia yendo a la Guerra con Ucrania, los conflictos siguen con Azerbaiyán intentando ocupar cada vez más territorio de Artsakh, donde hay pacifistas rusos que intentan mantener el orden pero no está claro exactamente el rol porque el 25 de Marzo del 2022 fallecieron tres soldados Armenios e hirieron alrededor de diez más, aparte de dejar a los Armenios sin gas porque ahora dependen del gas de Azerbaiyán. Es realmente triste la situación de los Armenios en Artsaj, en una región indefinida y que el Mundo nos dió espalda.
Al momento de escribir ésta nota, los Azerbaiyanos quieren meterse en Artsakh y ahora se suman enfrentamientos con los pacifistas rusos, a la vez que Pashinyan, el Primer Ministro de Armenia, ya dijo que «hay que prepararse para otra guerra» a pesar de que se va a reunir con Aliyev, el Presidente de Azerbaiyán. Al mismo tiempo, hay muchas protestas en Armenia pidiendo por la renuncia de Pashinyan pero ninguno de los opositores convencen para elegir por otro candidato. Armenia esta en un momento critico para ver que pasos a seguir, porque tambien se hablo de «normalizar relaciones» con Turquia, que a la vez siguen negando el Genocidio Armenio y hacen el gesto de «Lobos Grises», el equivalente al Nazismo.
La nota con ambos fue terminando con el fútbol nuevamente y entonces les pregunté «si jugasen un amistoso Armenia- Málaga, minuto 90, partido 0-0 y Málaga gana 1-0 con un golazo al ángulo, ¿se grita el gol?» y ambos dijeron que sí, pero «en forma mesurada».
Desde nuestra parte, solamente pedimos paz y que se puedan acordar puntos y se ponga fin a todo ésto.

On September 2020 the Second Nagorno- Karabagh war started, which brought a lot of issues for Armenians because of how little it was talked about and due to having seen so many violations of human rights that were covered up by the media, contrary to what is seen now in the war between Ukraine and Russia. Everything that you read now about Ukrainians, Us, the Armenians, lived it in 2020 while the entire World went silent. Through twitter I met two armenian bloggers and that’s how this article came to fruition…
The War of 2020. A war that happened between an undefined area of Armenian population inside of Azerbaijan, which would be ‘de iure’. A bloody 44 day war where, according to estimates by Putin, there were around 6000 people dead (I think it could actually be more). Media went quiet, to the point where a lot of people have no idea that a war of this magnitude even happened: people who live in a region named Artsakh of Armenian descent who stayed trapped inside of Azerbaijan during the Soviet Union times. When the USSR fell, the people from this area voted for their independence to which Azerbaijan denied and a very bloody war happened which Armenia won. Since then, it’s never been entirely clear why it couldn’t be solved and there are both sides to blame about this. In this site you can also read the interview I had with spanish journalist Pablo Gonzalez, who was the only neutral spanish speaking journalist who spoke spanish that covered the war. And during this time is when I met two armenian bloggers: Mundo Armenio and Imperio Armenia. Due to privacy reasons, they did not want to make their names public.
The conversation started as if we were already friends, because like Mundo Armenio told me «as Armenians we all wind up being related somehow, because we had to move to different Countries». What really caught my eye is that they’re both from Spain and they both like the same team: Malaga, although Mundo Armenio told me «I’m not a huge fan like I was when I was younger», but he does follow the scores and watches games when he can. When I asked them who the Rival team was (note: my soccer curiosity makes me want to know these things), they told me «Sevilla and on a lower scale, Cadiz». They both agreed that the elimination from Champions League against Borussia Dortmund still stung because of the referee mistakes and because there wasn’t VAR to be able to review any plays. Imperio Armenia told me three times «it was offside… I still can’t believe it».
Like good fans that they are, they follow the present moment of the team with a lot of anguish, with Malaga playing in Second Division and fighting to not go down to Third Division but with the hope of better times of seeing them again in La Liga and playing Real Madrid and Barcelona.
When I asked them why they started their pages, they both agreed that it was when the war in 2020 began and because «there are very few pages that talk about Armenia and in spanish».
The reason I wanted to have this interview with them was because of the war between Ukraine and Russia. The frustration we lived as Armenians in 2020, with media informing or, better yet, not reporting accurately or they barely spoke about it. A lot of people now see Ukrainians suffering and ads come out on Youtube about where to donate but when it was Armenians who wanted some attention, we got laughed at on social media and in Los Angeles they told us «go back to your Country to protest, you’re causing traffice issues», while all over Europe there were protests of Armenians against the war and the only people donating were us, the Armenians.
I wanted to add that the war from 2020 was between Artsakh, which has been fighting for its independence, against Azerbaijan. In my case, despite the sadness of this whole situation, I also think about those moms from Azerbaijan who also lost loved ones. I’ll never forget before the war started, they showed a video from an interview to a Senior when they asked her «Do you want to go to war with Armenia?» and she said «What for? A lot of young kids will go and die for nothing» and what comes to mind is seeing videos of Armenians executed by Azerbaijan. The difference with this war is that Ukrainians don’t see images of a terrorist from Syria who fought for Azerbaijan (paid mercenary) and cut the head of an Armenian soldier as a «war trophy». I read comments during 44 days from people from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Israel, Ukraine (yes, UKRAINE), Pakistan and Palestinians (exactly the same ones who fight for their lands) celebrating the outcome of this war and «freeing the land» (link on the upper portion, in spanish).
There were a lot of Armenians that went to fight in 2020 and we had athletes who died that were going to participate in the Olympics and a soccer player from Armenia’s Under-20 soccer National Team. Gor Sargsayan, from Armenia’s judo team, Albert Dadoyan, european champion en weight lifting, Tatul Harutyunyan, also in weight lifting, Erik Saryan, soccer player from Lokomotiv Yerevan and Liparit Dashtonyan, former player of Alashkert.
Outside of Artsakh is where there has been also part of the conflict because in the ’90’s Armenia kept land of Azerbaijan and, according to what Mundo Armenio told me, the President at the time for Armenia, Levon Ter Petrossian, wanted to «negotiate giving back those lands in exchange for the independence of the Repulic of Artsakh but he was seen as a traitor, because Armenians at the time were still in celebration mode and didn’t think that another conflict was possible». As a descendent of Armenians I can say I’m not blind and can see there were mistakes made that could have avoided everything that happened in 2020.
During the War we saw a huge number of atrocities that I will not share with you because it pains me to relive those moments and there is no need to share it, but you can search for some of them if you want to on Google, for example typing «Armenian head cut off» and you will be able to see the bloody things we saw, with a level of barbarism that I didn’t think I would see in this day and age. How is it possible to hate somebody so much just because they’re from a different Country? And from Europe all the «condemnation» were just empty words, only publicizing something on twitter of the level of «kids stop, please don’t hurt yourselves» and constantly seeing pictures of «Everybody with Azerbaijan» with people from all the Countries mentioned. I know that one thing is a region and another is a Country, but the pain is not any less as painful.
Fast forwarding in time, Azerbaijan wanted to erase the Armenian inscriptions from the churches and then they came out with tweets saying that those churches were «Albanian!». I never felt so powerless not only with this war, but what happened afterwards of what I saw and keep seeing from things that Mundo Armenio and Imperio Armenia post. With Russia going to war with Ukraine, the conflicts with Azerbaijan continue with them wanting to occupy more territory of Artsakh, where there are russian pacifists which their role isn’t really understood what it is , because in March of 2022 three Armenian soldiers got killed and ten more were injured, aside from leaving the entire region without any gas because the people in Artsakh depend on the gas from Azerbaijan. The situation of the people who live in Artsakh is a very sad one, an undefined region and the World turned their back on us.
At the time of publishing this article, Azerbaijan wants to invade Artsakh and they have now fought with Russian pacifists while Pashinyan, Armenia’s Prime Minister said to «get ready for another war with Azerbaijan» while he was going to meet with Aliyev, Azerbaijan’s President. At the same time, there are protests from the opposition wanting Pashinyan to resign but there is not a convincing candidate from the opposition. Armenia is in a very critical situation, where they have been in talks with Turkey about «normalizing relations», but they keep on denying the Armenian Genocide, while they keep on doing the gesture of the «Gray Wolves», the equvalent of the Nazis.
The interview ended talking about soccer with both of them with me asking them «if Armenia- Malaga play an exhibition game, it’s the 90th minute and the score is tied 0-0 and Malaga wins 1-0 with an unbelievable goal shot in the top corner of the goalbox, do you yell the goal?» and they both said they would but «moderately».
From our part, all we ask for is peace and to be able to come to a conclusion about everything that has happened.
